I am a person confined to a wheel chair after an assault by racial extremists, while studying in the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1977. After 18 months of hospitalization and stepping back into the society as a person with disability, enabled me to experience a totally different aspect of the society. Persons with disabilities were highly discriminated and cornered as incapable persons.
Thus, along with 14 other disabled persons I build contacts with in hospital, established this organization as a means of finding solutions to our problems, being persons with disabilities. It was the sympathy grant (amounting US$ 500/=)that I received from the Government of Sri Lanka, which was used as the seed capital for the CCoDP's initiation. However, along the road we realized that merely, earning a living for sustenance was not sufficient and that we should also find a way to be recognized as equals, as the physical characteristics does not give an overall picture of skills and capabilities that a person possess. Consequently, this organization was re-established as a welfare organization in the name, Central Council of Disabled Persons in Bandarawela, Sri Lanka.
